90125 marked a dramatic rebirth for Yes. Released in November 1983, it found the veteran progressive rock band reinventing itself for a new decade with a modern, radio-ready sound. The album began as a project by bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White, who joined forces with South African guitarist and songwriter Trevor Rabin under the name Cinema. With the return of original keyboardist Tony Kaye and the re-entry of vocalist Jon Anderson midway through recording, the lineup evolved into a revitalized version of Yes.

Produced by Trevor Horn, 90125 fused the band’s intricate musicianship with glossy 1980s production and electronic textures. Its centerpiece, “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” became the group’s only No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of the era’s defining rock hits. Other singles, including “Changes,” “Leave It,” and “It Can Happen,” continued the album’s chart success, each highlighting Rabin’s sharp songwriting and the group’s dynamic interplay.

The record’s title, taken from its Atco Records catalogue number, signaled a clean break from Yes’s 1970s aesthetic. With its minimalist artwork, crisp production, and streamlined arrangements, 90125 introduced the band to a new generation. It went on to sell several million copies worldwide, earned a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance (“Cinema”), and reestablished Yes as a major creative force in the 1980s. Today it stands as both a bold reinvention and one of the most successful comebacks in rock history.
