Waxahatchee's fifth studio album, Saint Cloud, was released on March 27, 2020, through Merge Records. After struggling with alcoholism during the promotional tour for her previous album Out in the Storm (2017), frontwoman Katie Crutchfield chose sobriety following a low point at Primavera Sound in Barcelona. The album was recorded with producer Brad Cook at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas and Long Pond in Stuyvesant, New York over summer 2019, with members of Michigan band Bonny Doon as her backing band.

Crutchfield wrote most of the songs at her home in Kansas City with partner Kevin Morby, drawing lyrical inspiration from Lucinda Williams and tackling themes of addiction and codependency. The album is titled after her father's hometown of St. Cloud, Florida. The opening track "Oxbow" grew from the moment Crutchfield decided to get sober in Barcelona, while "Fire" is described as "an anthem for self-acceptance and self-love."

Considered a country/Americana album with elements of punk rock and folk, Saint Cloud received universal acclaim from critics, earning a Metacritic score of 88/100. Critics praised its sincerity, depth, and mellow sound, with one writer calling it "a perfect listening companion" during the pandemic lockdown. Released at the onset of COVID-19 in the U.S., the album appeared on numerous year-end lists, ranking number 2 on both Paste and Pitchfork's best albums of 2020.
