NEW DOUBLE LP
New sealed copy. 2017 reissue on Interscope Records.
Lost Highway (Original Soundtrack) accompanied David Lynch’s 1997 psychological thriller and stands as one of the most memorable soundtrack albums of the decade. Produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, the collection features a dark and immersive mix of original score and contemporary rock, industrial, and alternative tracks that mirror the film’s unsettling tone. The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200, earned Gold certification in the United States, and went Platinum in Canada.
At Lynch’s request, Reznor curated a lineup of artists that reflected both his cinematic vision and commercial viability. The soundtrack features new and exclusive contributions from Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, The Smashing Pumpkins, and David Bowie, alongside tracks by Lou Reed, Rammstein, and Barry Adamson. Original score material comes from longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti, as well as Adamson and Reznor himself, whose work blurs the line between industrial rock and ambient tension.
Lynch wanted the music to speak to fans of his surreal, often disturbing films while maintaining an edge of accessibility for younger listeners discovering the soundtrack through its high-profile artists. Songs like Bowie’s “I’m Deranged” and Manson’s “Apple of Sodom” capture the noir menace of the film, while Reznor’s industrial textures and Badalamenti’s moody compositions give the record a cinematic weight.
More than just a companion piece, Lost Highway endures as a quintessential 1990s soundtrack, a collision of avant-garde atmosphere and alternative rock star power that perfectly complements Lynch’s world of paranoia and fractured identity.
