Toto IV is the fourth studio album by Toto, released in 1982 through Columbia Records. Recorded under considerable pressure to restore the band’s commercial momentum, it returned to the broad stylistic approach of their debut while using an unusually detailed studio process and a large group of additional musicians.
The album moves between rock, pop, R&B, jazz influenced arrangements, and polished soft rock. “Rosanna”, “Africa”, and “I Won’t Hold You Back” became its major singles, with “Africa” reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The sessions also marked the end of Toto’s original lineup, with bassist David Hungate departing after recording.
Toto IV reached number four on the Billboard 200 and won six Grammy Awards in 1983, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Rosanna”.
