Swordfishtrombones is the eighth studio album by Tom Waits, released in 1983 on Island Records. It was the first album he produced himself and marked a clear break from the piano based arrangements of his earlier work.
Recorded at Sunset Sound, the album uses percussion, banjo, accordion, bass marimba, harmonium, and other unconventional instruments. Songs such as “16 Shells from a Thirty Ought Six” and “In the Neighborhood” combine blues, cabaret, folk, and experimental rock, while Waits’s lyrics shift toward surreal stories about outsiders, drifters, and imagined landscapes.
The album reached number 167 on the Billboard 200 and is commonly viewed as the first part of a loose trilogy completed by Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years.
