Released on November 2, 1982, Long After Dark marked a turning point for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Issued on Backstreet Records, it introduced bassist and harmony vocalist Howie Epstein, whose contributions would become a defining element of the band’s sound moving forward.
The album features You Got Lucky, a brooding synth-laced single that became an early MTV staple and a Top 40 hit. It was followed by Change of Heart and Straight into Darkness, with the former also charting in the Billboard Top 40. The record pairs the band’s signature jangle and drive with darker lyrical undertones and a more polished production style.
While not as commercially celebrated as its predecessors, Long After Dark signaled the beginning of a new era for the Heartbreakers, blending evolving studio textures with the grit and melodic sensibility that remained central to Petty’s songwriting.
