Floodland is the second studio album by the Sisters of Mercy, released in 1987 through Merciful Release and Elektra Records. Created after the breakup of the band’s earlier lineup, the album was largely the work of singer and songwriter Andrew Eldritch, who handled the vocals, instruments, programming, and much of the production.
The record combines gothic rock and dark wave with sequenced electronics, programmed drums, keyboards, and large scale arrangements. “This Corrosion” and “Dominion / Mother Russia” were produced in part by Jim Steinman and feature extensive choral backing, while “Lucretia My Reflection”, “1959”, and the two “Flood” tracks move between driving rhythms and more restrained atmospheric passages.
Floodland reached number nine on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold in the United Kingdom. Its singles “This Corrosion”, “Dominion”, and “Lucretia My Reflection” all reached the UK Top 20.
