It's Only Rock 'n Roll marked a transitional moment for the Rolling Stones, both in lineup and creative direction. Their twelfth studio album and the last to feature guitarist Mick Taylor, it captures a band redefining itself as the 1970s evolved. It also introduced “The Glimmer Twins,” the production pseudonym for Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who took over behind the board following the departure of longtime producer Jimmy Miller.
Musically, the album leans into the band’s signature blues and rock foundation, but not without detours into funk and reggae. The title track was recorded during an informal jam session with Faces members Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones, along with Willie Weeks and David Bowie. Jagger later brought the recording to Richards, who added guitar overdubs before the band decided to release it largely as it was. That session would later factor into Wood’s invitation to join the band after Taylor’s departure.
It's Only Rock 'n Roll reached number one in the United States and number two in the United Kingdom. Though not as critically celebrated as some of their earlier work, it laid the groundwork for the next era. Frequent collaborators such as Billy Preston, Ian Stewart, Nicky Hopkins, and percussionist Ray Cooper helped round out the album’s sound, offering a loose and confident snapshot of a band preparing for its next chapter.
