Low Budget is the eighteenth studio album by the Kinks, released in 1979. Recorded primarily in New York, it marked the first Kinks album to feature bassist Jim Rodford and continued the band’s late 1970s shift toward a heavier, more arena oriented rock sound.
The album addresses contemporary issues including inflation, labour unrest, and the energy crisis, with songs such as “(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman”, “A Gallon of Gas”, “Catch Me Now I’m Falling”, and the title track. Musically, it combines hard rock, new wave, and traces of disco with Ray Davies’s direct, topical songwriting.
Low Budget reached number 11 on the Billboard albums chart, becoming the Kinks’ highest charting studio album in the United States.
