Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is the tenth studio album by American rock band the Flaming Lips, released on July 16, 2002, by Warner Bros. Records. Produced by Dave Fridmann, the album marked a shift toward a more electronic and rhythm-driven sound, blending synthesizers and programmed beats with acoustic instrumentation.

The album opens with Fight Test, a song that later drew comparisons to Cat Stevens’ Father and Son, resulting in a copyright settlement. Its early tracks reference the character Yoshimi, loosely inspired by Japanese musician Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms and OOIOO, who also contributed to the recording. While the album’s title and artwork suggest a science-fiction concept, the narrative thread is limited, with most songs addressing themes of love, mortality, and human emotion.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots received widespread critical acclaim and became the Flaming Lips’ most commercially successful album to date. It earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia), achieved gold certification in the United States, and was later included on several publications’ best-of-the-decade lists.
