Songs the Lord Taught Us is the debut album by the Cramps, released in 1980 on I.R.S. Records in North America and Illegal Records in the UK.
The album combines rockabilly, garage rock, punk, and 1950s horror imagery with distorted guitar, stripped down rhythms, and Lux Interior’s theatrical vocal style. Its raw production and deliberately exaggerated presentation established the group’s early sound and helped shape the style later associated with psychobilly.
Rather than treating its influences reverently, the Cramps recast early rock and roll through camp, noise, and B movie culture.
