The Best of the Band is the first greatest hits compilation by The Band, released in 1976. The collection draws from the group’s early catalog, featuring ten tracks taken from six of their first seven studio albums. It highlights key material from Music from Big Pink, The Band, Stage Fright, Cahoots, Moondog Matinee, and Northern Lights Southern Cross.
The album also includes the standalone 1976 single “Twilight,” which served as the compilation’s new track at the time. The release offers a concise overview of the group’s influential blend of roots rock, folk, and country that defined their work in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
