NEW DOUBLE LP
New sealed copy. 2025 double LP remastered reissue. Includes the original album remastered (supervised by the bands original manager, Gordon Ogilvie) and a previously unreleased live LP, Live At Troon, recorded on October 20th, 1979.
Released in 1979 on Rough Trade Records, Inflammable Material was the first independently issued album to reach the UK Top 20. Its chart success helped broaden the space for independent labels and later indie rock across the United Kingdom. The record arrived at the height of the Troubles, and its songs reflect day to day life in Northern Ireland through direct accounts of sectarian conflict, economic pressure, and the sense of living under constant tension.
Stiff Little Fingers formed in 1977 after Jake Burns and his bandmates shifted from rock covers to the emerging punk movement. They were drawn to the urgency of the music and the way groups like the Clash wrote about lived experience. Local events had a strong impact as well, including the riot outside Ulster Hall in late 1977 following the cancelled Clash show, which confirmed for the band that a new scene was forming around them.
Inflammable Material was recorded in 1978, mostly at Spaceward Studios in Cambridge, with Alternative Ulster completed at Island Studios in London. The sessions were fast, raw, and approached as if they were playing a live set, which matched their limited studio experience at the time.
On its release, the album drew strong praise from the British music press. Reviewers highlighted its immediacy, its sharp point of view, and the conviction in Jake Burns’ delivery. In the years since, Inflammable Material has remained a defining document of late seventies punk and a clear record of the environment that shaped it.
