Getz/Gilberto is the landmark 1964 collaboration between American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist and vocalist João Gilberto, with composer and pianist Antônio Carlos Jobim. Released on Verve Records, the album helped introduce bossa nova to a global audience, blending the cool lyricism of jazz with the gentle sway of Brazilian rhythm. It features iconic tracks like “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” and “Garota de Ipanema” (“The Girl from Ipanema”), the latter sung by Astrud Gilberto in her recorded debut. The song became a massive international hit and earned the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, launching Astrud’s career.
Praised for its minimalism, melodic restraint, and rhythmic sophistication, Getz/Gilberto won four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, becoming the first non-American release to receive that honor. It remains one of the best-selling and most influential jazz records ever made, credited with bringing bossa nova to mainstream audiences worldwide.
