Snail Mail's debut studio album, Lush, was released on June 8, 2018, through Matador Records. Written over a year and a half by Lindsey Jordan, who composed 30 songs before selecting 10 for the album, the record was produced by Jake Aron and completed while Jordan was still in high school. Jordan described a meticulous writing process that involved recording demos, arranging guitar parts, and taking breaks between sections to maintain objectivity about the material.

The album was preceded by three singles: "Pristine," released in March 2018 and praised as an "indie rock masterpiece" by The Fader; "Heat Wave," which peaked at number 94 on the Belgium Ultratop singles chart; and "Let's Find an Out," a more delicate track compared to the album's louder moments. Critics highlighted Jordan's guitar work as the album's focal point, with AllMusic noting the "hazy quality" of her guitar tones and vulnerable vocal delivery. The album's lyrical themes include heartbreak, confusion, and loneliness.

Lush received widespread critical acclaim, earning a Metacritic score of 80/100. Pitchfork awarded it 8.7/10 and compared Jordan's work to Liz Phair, Fiona Apple, and Frank Ocean. The album was nominated for Best Rock Album at the Libera Awards and appeared on numerous year-end lists, including number 5 on both Paste and Pitchfork's best albums of 2018. "Pristine" was ranked number 6 on Pitchfork's 100 Best Songs of the Year.
