World Painted Blood is the eleventh studio album by Slayer, released in 2009 through American Recordings and Sony Music. Produced by Greg Fidelman with Rick Rubin as executive producer, it was the band's final album to feature the original lineup of Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, and Dave Lombardo. It was also Slayer's final release through American Recordings, ending a relationship with Rubin that had begun with Reign in Blood in 1986.
Unlike previous Slayer records, much of World Painted Blood was written during the studio sessions rather than completed beforehand. Hanneman contributed the majority of the material, bringing a stronger punk influence alongside King's more direct thrash approach. The album combines speed, melody, and heavier groove based passages, with lyrics addressing war, apocalypse, disease, serial killers, and historical violence.
The album reached number 12 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the US Top Hard Rock Albums chart. "Hate Worldwide" and the title track were both nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance.
