We Were Born in a Flame is the debut full length studio album by Canadian singer and songwriter Sam Roberts. The record expanded on material from his earlier independent releases and EP, including newly recorded versions of “Brother Down” and “Where Have All the Good People Gone?”.
The album blends straightforward rock songwriting with melodic pop influences, built around guitars, keyboards, and Roberts’ distinctive vocal style. “Brother Down”, “Don’t Walk Away Eileen”, “Where Have All the Good People Gone?”, and “Hard Road” became its best known singles and helped establish Roberts as a major presence in Canadian rock.
We Were Born in a Flame debuted at number two on the Canadian Albums Chart and was later certified double platinum in Canada. It won Album of the Year and Rock Album of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards, while Roberts was named Artist of the Year.
