Stronger Than Pride is the third studio album by Sade, released in May 1988 by Epic Records. It was the group’s first self produced album and followed Promise from 1985. Songwriting took place in Spain and London, with recording sessions held in France and the Bahamas over the course of a year.
The album reflects a more restrained production approach, emphasizing space, dynamics, and vocal clarity. Musically, it blends elements of soul, pop, jazz, and bossa nova, alternating between sparse acoustic arrangements and groove driven tracks. Songs such as “Love Is Stronger Than Pride,” “Haunt Me,” “Keep Looking,” and “Give It Up” illustrate the range of textures and pacing across the record.
Stronger Than Pride produced five singles and achieved top ten chart positions in multiple countries. It was a commercial success and remains a key release in the band’s catalog. In later years, the album has received renewed critical recognition and was included on Pitchfork’s list of the best albums of the nineteen eighties.
