Originally released in 1972 on Blue Note, Two Headed Freap is the debut album from organist Ronnie Foster, blending soul jazz with early 70s funk in a way that feels cinematic, colorful, and rhythmically sharp. Though it leans more on groove than improvisation, the album’s polished production and infectious momentum have earned it a lasting reputation among fans of jazz-funk.
Best known for its standout track “Mystic Brew,” which was famously sampled in A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation,” the album has continued to resonate across genres. “Mystic Brew” has also been reinterpreted by artists including the Vijay Iyer Trio, BadBadNotGood, and Kendrick Lamar.
While traditional jazz heads may find the session a bit too sleek, Two Headed Freap remains a key reference point for the fusion of jazz and funk in the early 70s and a foundational release in the Blue Note electric era.
