King of the Delta Blues Singers is a 1961 compilation that introduced a new generation of listeners to the music of Robert Johnson. Drawing from recordings made during two sessions in 1936 and 1937, the album collects some of Johnson's most influential performances, including “Cross Road Blues”, “Hellhound on My Trail”, “Sweet Home Chicago”, and “Terraplane Blues”.
Released during the folk and blues revival of the early 1960s, the compilation played a major role in bringing Johnson's work back into circulation decades after his death. The album exposed his music to a wider audience and helped establish his reputation among emerging musicians in both the United States and Britain.
Although Johnson recorded only a small body of work during his lifetime, King of the Delta Blues Singers became one of the most important blues compilations ever released. Its influence can be heard across generations of blues, rock, and folk artists, and it remains the most widely recognized introduction to Johnson's recorded legacy.
