Dead Letter Office is a collection of R.E.M. rarities and B sides, released in 1987. Drawn from recordings made between the periods surrounding Murmur and Lifes Rich Pageant, the album gathers outtakes, non album material, and cover versions that had appeared on singles and other releases.
The collection highlights the band's wide range of influences, including songs by the Velvet Underground, Aerosmith, Roger Miller, and fellow Athens band Pylon. Its looser material and cover choices provide a different view of R.E.M. from their main studio albums of the period.
The original vinyl and cassette editions contained 15 tracks, while the CD edition added all five songs from the band's 1982 Chronic Town EP, making the release an important source for that material for many years.
