Released on February 18, 1985, No Jacket Required is the third solo album by Phil Collins, who was also fresh off touring with Genesis and working alongside Eric Clapton. The album marked a stylistic shift for Collins, moving away from the more introspective themes of his earlier solo work to embrace a vibrant mix of uptempo and dance-friendly songs.

No Jacket Required features collaborations with Helen Terry, Peter Gabriel, and Sting. Tracks like "Don't Lose My Number" and "Sussudio" originated from improvisation sessions, while "Long Long Way to Go" reflected Collins' political concerns at the time. The album was a massive success, topping the UK charts for five consecutive weeks and hitting number one in the US for seven non-consecutive weeks. Singles such as "One More Night," "Sussudio," "Don't Lose My Number," and "Take Me Home" all cracked the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Sussudio" and "One More Night" both reaching the top spot.

Beyond its radio dominance, songs from No Jacket Required also appeared on television shows like Miami Vice and Cold Case. "The Man with the Horn" was re-recorded for the Miami Vice episode "Phil the Shill." The album was certified Diamond in the US in 2001 and has sold more than 25 million copies globally, earning three Grammy Awards including Album of the Year.
