Horses is the debut studio album by American musician Patti Smith, released on November 10, 1975, through Arista Records. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios and produced by former Velvet Underground member John Cale, the album introduced Smith’s distinctive fusion of rock and poetry—an artistic manifesto that would help define the emerging punk movement. Backed by her band, Smith combined raw musical energy with lyrical intensity, drawing equally from rock tradition and avant-garde experimentation.
The songs on Horses balance minimalist punk aggression with improvisational freedom, reflecting Smith’s literary sensibility and confrontational stage presence. Tracks like “Gloria” reimagined rock classics through her own subversive lens, while “Birdland” and “Land” stretched beyond genre boundaries into hypnotic, stream-of-consciousness storytelling. Lyrically, Smith channeled both personal reflection and mythic imagery, exploring identity, spirituality, and transformation.
Although only a modest commercial success upon release, Horses was immediately recognized as a radical and visionary statement. Its raw honesty and poetic ambition made it a foundational work for punk and alternative rock. Decades later, it remains one of the most acclaimed debut albums in history—an enduring testament to Smith’s influence as a writer, performer, and iconoclast. In 2009, the Library of Congress preserved Horses in the National Recording Registry for its cultural and artistic significance.
