Messy is the debut studio album by English singer songwriter Olivia Dean, released on 30 June 2023 through EMI Records. The album reached number four on the UK Albums Chart and was later certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry. It was also shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2023.
Dean began work on the album after releasing several EPs and collaborated with producers and writers including Matt Helders, Tre Jean Marie, Bastian Langebæk, Max Wolfgang, Matt Colton, and Davide Rossi. Musically, the record blends contemporary R&B with neo soul and Motown inspired arrangements, reflecting the influences Dean cited during its development.
The album was dedicated to her grandmother and the Windrush generation, themes that informed both the songwriting and the broader perspective of the project. Messy received generally positive reviews from critics, who highlighted Dean’s vocal performance and the album’s stylistic range across its mix of upbeat and more reflective material.
