Nest is the fourth studio album by Canadian rock band Odds, and their last release before 2008’s Cheerleader. The record produced two major hits: “Someone Who’s Cool,” which reached number two in Canada, and “Make You Mad,” which also broke into the top ten.
Odds have always made irreverent, melodic rock and roll with a darkly ironic edge—a mix that has earned them loyal fans for more than three decades. Formed in Vancouver in 1987, they broke through with their 1991 debut Neopolitan and followed with 1993’s Gold-certified Bedbugs, featuring “It Falls Apart” and “Heterosexual Man.” Their next release, Good Weird Feeling (1995), went platinum and spawned six radio singles, setting the stage for Nest.
Recorded over three summer weeks in 1996 at Vancouver’s storied Mushroom Studios, Nest was a true do-it-yourself project. Working under the tongue-in-cheek pseudonym “Nigel the Cat,” the band handled production themselves, with Steven Drake behind the console. The sessions were messy, creative, and full of life—exactly what Odds wanted. The resulting album captured the band at their peak, delivering sharp hooks, sardonic wit, and undeniable charm. Nest remains one of their defining moments.
