Busyhead is the debut studio album by Noah Kahan, released in 2019 through Republic Records. The album brings together material written across the first several years of his recording career, including earlier singles "Young Blood," "Hurt Somebody," "False Confidence," and "Mess." Much of the record was produced by Joel Little, whose arrangements combine Kahan's acoustic guitar based songwriting with polished folk pop production, keyboards, percussion, and programmed rhythms.
The songs document Kahan's transition from his Vermont upbringing into touring and the music industry, with recurring themes of homesickness, anxiety, relationships, self doubt, and the pressure surrounding a new career. Kahan described the album as a record of the preceding four years of his life, while "Mess" reflects his desire to retreat home and "Cynic" addresses the changing relationship between music as a passion and as a profession.
The title comes from a counseling program Kahan attended as a teenager, where he was placed in a category called "Busyhead" after answering questions about personal risk factors. The term became a fitting summary of the restless internal dialogue running throughout the album.
