Silk & Soul is the thirteenth studio album by Nina Simone, released in 1967 through RCA Victor. The album brings together soul, jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues while continuing Simone's use of popular song as a vehicle for both personal expression and social commentary.
Among its best known tracks are "Go to Hell," which earned Simone a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and her recording of Billy Taylor's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free," a song closely associated with the civil rights movement. The album also includes Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love," along with "It Be's That Way Sometime," written by Simone's brother Sam Waymon.
Elsewhere, "Turning Point" begins with the perspective of a child making a new friend before shifting toward questions of racism, while the Simone composition "Consummation" revisits a melody she had recorded earlier in her career. Silk & Soul reflects the range of material Simone was recording during the late 1960s, combining contemporary songs, original compositions, and politically conscious themes.
