Originally released by Philips Records in 1965, I Put a Spell on You is one of Nina Simone’s most accessible and enduring studio albums. Recorded in New York City over the course of 1964 and 1965, it blends Simone’s classical piano style and commanding vocal delivery with pop, jazz, and orchestral arrangements, marking a clear turn toward the mainstream without losing her edge.
The title track remains one of her most iconic performances, reaching number 28 in the UK and landing on the Hot R&B Singles chart in the US. While Simone takes a brief detour into instrumental jazz with “Blues on Purpose,” much of the album balances elegance and force, giving surprising depth to more pop-leaning material. It peaked at number 99 on the Billboard 200 and number 18 in the UK, and its legacy has only grown: NPR ranked it number 3 on their list of the 150 Greatest Albums Made by Women, and in 2024, Apple Music placed it at number 88 on its 100 Best Albums list.
