Bryter Layter is the second studio album by Nick Drake, released on March 5, 1971 by Island Records. Recorded in 1970, the album expanded on the gentle folk style of his debut while introducing richer arrangements and a broader musical palette. It would also be Drake’s final album to feature full backing musicians, as his next record, Pink Moon, was recorded almost entirely solo.

The sessions included contributions from members of Fairport Convention as well as John Cale, with orchestral arrangements by Robert Kirby. The sound blends Drake’s delicate guitar work with strings, keyboards, and light rhythm sections, creating a warm and atmospheric setting for songs like “Northern Sky,” “Hazey Jane II,” and “At the Chime of a City Clock.”

Although the album received modest attention at the time of release, Bryter Layter has since been widely recognized as one of Drake’s most beautiful and carefully arranged recordings. It remains a key part of his legacy and is often ranked among the most acclaimed British folk albums of the era.
