Cause I Sez So is the fourth studio album by the New York Dolls, released in 2009 through Atco Records. Reuniting with producer Todd Rundgren—who helmed their 1973 debut—the band returned with a mix of swagger, reflection, and a surprising stylistic range.
The album captures the Dolls’ trademark attitude, balancing gritty garage rock with flashes of introspection. David Johansen’s weathered rasp remains commanding, lending weight to songs like “Better Than You” and “Cause I Sez So,” while the band stretches into new territory with a reggae-inflected reworking of their early anthem “Trash.”
Critics received the album warmly. Many praised its vitality and the unlikely chemistry between Johansen and Rundgren after decades apart. The Boston Globe called it “classic New York Dolls” full of “heart, soul, and swagger,” while The A.V. Club described it as “life-affirming.” The Independent noted that it was “far better than we had any right to expect.” Some, like Spin, found it less essential than the band’s original records, but even detractors conceded that it delivered solid, bluesy rock with characteristic wit.
Reaching No. 159 on the Billboard 200, Cause I Sez So stands as a confident late-career effort—proof that the Dolls could age without losing their grit, humor, or downtown edge.
