Released in 1983 on Factory Records, Power, Corruption & Lies marked a turning point for New Order as they moved away from the darker post-punk roots of Movement toward a sound built on synthesizers, sequencers, and dance rhythms. Drawing inspiration from Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, and the New York club scene, the album blended electronic innovation with the band’s melodic instincts, creating one of the earliest and most influential synth-pop records.
The record included songs like “Age of Consent,” “Your Silent Face,” and “5-8-6,” which hinted at the development of house and electronic dance music. Recorded during the same sessions, the non-album single “Blue Monday” became the biggest-selling twelve-inch single of all time and cemented New Order’s reputation as pioneers of club culture.
Peter Saville’s sleeve design, featuring Henri Fantin-Latour’s A Basket of Roses coded with color blocks in place of text, became an icon of 1980s design. The cover was later celebrated by the Royal Mail with a commemorative stamp and included in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
Critically acclaimed on release, the album has since been recognized as one of the greatest of the decade and of all time. Rolling Stone, NME, Pitchfork, and Slant Magazine have all placed it in their all-time rankings, praising its blend of electronic experimentation and emotional depth. Today, Power, Corruption & Lies stands as the record that defined New Order’s identity and reshaped the landscape of British synth-pop.
