Country Grammar is the debut studio album by American rapper Nelly, released in 2000 through Universal Records. Produced primarily by Jason "Jay E" Epperson, the album introduced Nelly's distinctive blend of Southern hip hop, pop rap, and melodic singalong hooks, shaped by his St. Louis background and Missouri vocal inflection.
The record combines bass heavy, relatively minimal production with a loose, conversational delivery that moves easily between rapping and melody. Songs including "Country Grammar (Hot Shit)," "E.I.," "Ride wit Me," and "Batter Up" helped establish both Nelly and the St. Lunatics nationally, while giving St. Louis a more visible place within mainstream hip hop at the beginning of the 2000s.
Country Grammar topped the Billboard 200 for five weeks and later became one of the most commercially successful rap albums of its era. In 2016, it was certified Diamond by the RIAA for shipments of ten million copies in the United States.
