Unplugged is Neil Young’s 1993 live acoustic album recorded for MTV’s Unplugged series and released through Reprise Records. Captured in February 1993, the performance revisits material from across Young’s catalogue in stripped back arrangements that emphasize acoustic guitars, pump organ, and understated backing instrumentation.
The set includes songs such as “The Old Laughing Lady”, “Helpless”, “Harvest Moon”, “Like a Hurricane”, and “The Needle and the Damage Done”, balancing early career material with songs from his more recent releases at the time. Although the performance appears relaxed on record, reports from the sessions described a difficult recording process, with Young reportedly unhappy with parts of the initial performance and ultimately re recording the set before its official release.
Released during a renewed period of critical and commercial visibility for Young in the early 1990s, Unplugged became one of the more acclaimed entries in MTV’s acoustic concert series and highlighted the strength of his songwriting in a more intimate setting.
