NEW DOUBLE LP
New sealed copy. 2024 reissue.
In Search of... is the debut studio album by American band N.E.R.D., originally released in 2001 and rerecorded for its wider 2002 release. Created by Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley, the album grew out of Williams and Hugo's work as the Neptunes but was conceived as a separate project with a more direct blend of hip hop, funk, rock, and pop. Its title was taken from the television series In Search of..., hosted by Leonard Nimoy.
The original version used drum machines, synthesizers, and electronic production similar to the Neptunes' work of the period. For the 2002 edition, N.E.R.D. replaced much of that backing with live drums, guitars, and bass performed by Spymob, giving songs such as "Lapdance," "Provider," "Truth or Dare," "Rock Star," and "Stay Together" a stronger funk rock and rap rock sound.
In Search of... became an important early example of the crossover between hip hop production, alternative rock, and funk that would become increasingly prominent during the following decade. Its influence has since been cited by artists and designers including Tyler, the Creator and Virgil Abloh.
