The Infamous is the second studio album by Mobb Deep, released in 1995 through Loud Records. Produced primarily by Havoc, with additional production from Q Tip, the album features guest appearances from Nas, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, and Q Tip. It marked the duo's breakthrough, establishing their stark, uncompromising approach to East Coast hip hop.
Built around sparse beats, eerie piano loops, and gritty street level storytelling, the album includes the singles “Shook Ones, Part II”, “Survival of the Fittest”, “Temperature's Rising”, and “Give Up the Goods (Just Step)”. Its production and lyrical focus on life in New York City distinguished it from many of its contemporaries and helped define the sound of mid 1990s hardcore hip hop.
The Infamous was both a critical and commercial success, reaching the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and later earning Platinum certification in the United States. It remains one of the defining releases of the East Coast hip hop renaissance of the 1990s.
