This release presents one complete set from the Miles Davis Quintet’s engagement at the Plugged Nickel in Chicago in December 1965. The residency featured Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams at a pivotal point in their development. Across seven recorded sets, the group moved away from fixed structures and began reshaping familiar material through rapid shifts in rhythm, harmony, and phrasing. These performances are central documents of the Second Great Quintet and show the band altering its approach to standards such as All of You and My Funny Valentine along with pieces associated with Davis including So What and Agitation.
Sony Legacy will reissue the full Plugged Nickel recordings as a box set in January 2026 as part of the Miles Davis Centennial observances. For RSD Black Friday, one of the complete sets is issued as a two LP edition on black vinyl.
