Number Ones is a greatest hits compilation by Michael Jackson, released on November 18, 2003, by Epic Records. It was Jackson’s first standalone compilation for the label, following the HIStory anthology, and was built around singles that reached number one on charts worldwide. The album also includes “One More Chance,” the final original single released during Jackson’s lifetime.
The compilation was a major commercial success internationally, debuting at number one in the United Kingdom and later returning to the top position following Jackson’s death in 2009. In the United States, it became the best-selling album for six non-consecutive weeks in 2009 and spent twenty-seven weeks at number one on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. At the time, catalog titles were excluded from the Billboard 200, a rule that was later changed in response to the posthumous chart performance of Jackson’s catalog.
Number Ones marked several commercial milestones. Jackson became the first artist to sell more than one million music downloads in a single week, and the album ranked among the top-selling releases of 2009 in both the United States and worldwide. It has since been certified 5× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and has sold over 10 million copies globally.
