Countdown to Extinction is Megadeth's fifth studio album, released in 1992 through Capitol Records. It was the second album recorded by the lineup of Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson, and Nick Menza, and marked a shift toward a more focused and accessible sound while retaining the band's technical precision and heavy metal roots.
The album features some of Megadeth's most recognizable songs, including “Symphony of Destruction”, “Sweating Bullets”, “Skin o' My Teeth”, and the title track. Lyrically, the record addresses topics such as politics, war, mental health, environmental issues, and social responsibility, reflecting Mustaine's increasingly direct songwriting approach.
Countdown to Extinction was both a critical and commercial breakthrough for the band, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and becoming Megadeth's best selling studio album.
