She Hangs Brightly is the debut studio album by Mazzy Star, released in 1990 through Rough Trade Records and later reissued by Capitol Records. The album introduced the pairing of Hope Sandoval's restrained vocals with David Roback's guitar work, establishing the atmospheric sound the band would continue to develop on later releases.
The record blends alternative rock with psychedelic blues, dream pop, and sparse early blues influences. Sandoval's detached delivery and Roback's slide guitar give songs such as "Halah," "Blue Flower," "Free," and "Ghost Highway" a subdued, nocturnal character, while the arrangements move between slow, minimal pieces and more driving psychedelic rock.
"Blue Flower" reached the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, while "Halah" charted several years later following the success of "Fade into You." She Hangs Brightly has since been recognized as an important early release in the development of Mazzy Star's sound and was later included by Pitchfork among its notable dream pop albums.
