Call of the Mastodon serves as a crucial document of Mastodon’s formative years, compiling the band’s earliest recordings into a definitive collection. Released on February 7, 2006, via Relapse Records, the album revisits material originally featured on the band’s 9 Song Demo, recorded when vocalist Eric Saner was still in the lineup. Following his departure, guitarist Brent Hinds and bassist Troy Sanders took over vocal duties, re-recording the tracks for Mastodon’s Slick Leg and Lifesblood EPs.
Years later, the songs—now featuring Hinds and Sanders on vocals—were remixed and remastered by original engineer Matt Washburn, culminating in the release of Call of the Mastodon. While officially a compilation, the album has been retrospectively viewed as a significant milestone in the band’s discography. In a Crack the Skye documentary, Hinds referred to it as Mastodon’s first studio album, a perspective later reinforced by guitarist Bill Kelliher during his appearance on Loudwire’s Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?
