Daydream is the fifth studio album by Mariah Carey, released in 1995 through Columbia Records. Following Music Box and Merry Christmas, the album marked a significant shift in Carey's musical direction as she incorporated stronger contemporary R&B and hip hop influences while taking greater control over the writing and production. Collaborators included Walter Afanasieff, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, Dave Hall, and Babyface.
The album balances pop and R&B with elements of gospel, soul, and hip hop, moving between large scale ballads and more rhythm driven material. "Fantasy" incorporates a sample of Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love," while "One Sweet Day" pairs Carey with Boyz II Men and "Always Be My Baby" began a long creative partnership with Jermaine Dupri. Songs such as "Underneath the Stars," "Melt Away," and "Looking In" also reflect the album's more personal and contemporary approach.
Daydream produced three Billboard Hot 100 number one singles in "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day," and "Always Be My Baby." The album topped the Billboard 200 for six weeks, received six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, and went on to sell more than 20 million copies worldwide.
