Limblifter’s I/O (pronounced In/Out) arrived in September 2004, marking the Vancouver band’s return after a four-year break. Following the departure of founding drummer Kurt Dahle, frontman Ryan Dahle reassembled the lineup and recorded the album at The Factory Studios with bassist Megan Bradfield, guitarist David Patterson, and drummer Pat Steward behind the kit. The record was released through Limblifter’s own imprint in partnership with MapleNationwide and Universal Music Canada.
Musically, I/O carries forward the band’s signature mix of power pop and alternative rock, sharpened by Dahle’s melodic instincts and offbeat lyricism. The opening tracks “Get Money” and “Perfect Day to Disappear” deliver bright, hook-filled energy, while “Fiercely Co-Dependent” and “Drug Induced” dive into darker, more reflective territory. “Alarm Bells” adds strings to the mix, and “On the Moon” closes with a raw, garage-rock edge.
Critics praised Dahle’s songwriting and inventive arrangements, noting the album’s layered textures and analog warmth. Pitchfork called I/O a strong comeback that balanced polished pop craft with an undercurrent of grit. Though not a commercial hit, the record has since earned a reputation as an overlooked gem of early 2000s Canadian rock—a confident, melodic statement from a band reclaiming its voice.
