Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by English rock band Led Zeppelin, released on February 24, 1975 in the United States and four days later in the United Kingdom. It was the band’s first release on their Swan Song label. Eight new songs were recorded at Headley Grange in early 1974, while seven previously unreleased tracks from earlier sessions were added to expand the project into a double album. The result showcased the band’s range, spanning hard rock, progressive passages, folk influences, and straight-ahead rock and roll.
The record was packaged in a distinctive die-cut sleeve designed by Peter Corriston, which delayed its release due to manufacturing difficulties. Despite this, Physical Graffiti was an immediate success, debuting at number one in the UK and number three in the US, supported by a major American tour and a five-night stand at Earl’s Court in London.
Critically and commercially acclaimed, the album is often regarded as one of Led Zeppelin’s greatest achievements. In 2006 it was certified 16× platinum by the RIAA, signifying over eight million copies sold in the United States, and its influence has endured through multiple reissues, including an expansive 40th anniversary edition in 2015.
