The Universe Smiles Upon You ii is a re recorded reinterpretation of Khruangbin’s debut album, created to mark the tenth anniversary of the original 2015 release The Universe Smiles Upon You. The album was recorded in early 2025 at the Central Texas barn where the band has recorded much of its catalog since its earliest sessions. Rather than issuing bonus material or archival recordings, the band chose to revisit the original material and perform it again as they sound now.
The album presents ten new versions of the original songs, newly performed and resequenced. While the compositions remain intact, the arrangements reflect changes in pacing, dynamics, and interplay developed through a decade of touring and recording. The sessions were recorded live over several days, with a focus on close mic placement, acoustic textures, and real time interaction between Laura Lee, Mark Speer, and DJ Johnson. A longer version of “Two Fish and an Elephant” appears, and “Bin Bin ii,” originally a bonus track, is integrated into the main sequence.
The project was recorded in the same rural setting used for the original album, with modest updates to the space but the same emphasis on live performance. The Universe Smiles Upon You ii functions as both a reflection on the band’s early work and a document of how those songs exist after ten years of shared development.
