Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison is the legendary live album that reignited Cash’s career and cemented his outlaw image. Recorded on January 13, 1968, inside California’s Folsom State Prison, the album captures two raw, electric performances backed by the Tennessee Three, with support from June Carter and Carl Perkins.
The project was inspired by Cash’s long-standing interest in prison reform and his 1955 hit “Folsom Prison Blues.” With his personal life stabilized and producer Bob Johnston on board, Cash seized the opportunity to make a bold, authentic statement. The resulting album reached number one on the country charts and broke into the top 15 on the Billboard 200. Its lead single—a powerful live rendition of “Folsom Prison Blues”—earned him a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance.
Certified triple platinum and widely acclaimed, At Folsom Prison remains one of the most important live albums in American music history. It is regularly featured on lists of the greatest albums of all time and continues to influence artists across genres.
