Originally written as two separate ideas, Spielberg liked both and asked Williams to combine them—creating the main theme and its bridge. Romantic and darker cues contrast the action, from sweeping nods to golden-age Hollywood love themes to ominous orchestral lines underscoring the film’s Nazi antagonists. For the Ark of the Covenant, Williams incorporated chorus and orchestral grandeur to evoke biblical awe.
Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, the Raiders soundtrack remains one of the most recognizable and enduring works in film music, setting the tone for an entire franchise and solidifying Williams’ legacy in cinematic storytelling.
