Ascension is an album by John Coltrane, recorded in 1965 and released the following year on Impulse! Records. Presented as a single extended composition, it features an eleven piece ensemble that includes Freddie Hubbard, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones.
The performance moves between dense collective improvisation and individual solos, with multiple horns creating a forceful, continuously shifting texture. Its scale, intensity, and open structure marked a clear departure from Coltrane’s earlier quartet recordings.
Initially divisive, Ascension became an important document of Coltrane’s move into free jazz and of the broader avant garde movement developing in the mid 1960s.
