Bad Reputation is the debut solo studio album by Joan Jett, originally released independently in 1980 under her own name and reissued the following year by Boardwalk Records with its new title. Recorded after the breakup of the Runaways and before the formation of the Blackhearts, the album was financed by producer Kenny Laguna after major labels declined to release it.
The record draws on 1950s and 1960s rock and roll, glam, punk, and new wave, with loud guitars, direct rhythms, and Jett’s forceful vocal delivery. Songs such as “Bad Reputation”, “You Don’t Own Me”, and “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)” combine original material with covers, supported by musicians including Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Clem Burke, and Frank Infante.
Bad Reputation reached number 51 on the Billboard 200 and established the independent approach that would continue through Jett’s early solo career.
