Japanese Breakfast's third studio album, Jubilee, was released on June 4, 2021, through Dead Oceans. Released shortly after frontwoman Michelle Zauner's memoir Crying in H Mart, the album marks a deliberate shift from her previous work, with Zauner stating that after "spending the last five years writing about grief," she wanted the album "to be about joy." This contrasts with her first two albums, Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017), which dealt with grief surrounding her mother's death from pancreatic cancer in 2014.
Zauner took music theory lessons and studied piano in preparation for the album, allowing her to incorporate more interesting chord changes and write more on piano for the first time. The album blends alternative pop, dream pop, and indie pop with elements of indie rock and chamber pop. Singles include "Be Sweet," co-written with Wild Nothing's Jack Tatum years before the album's release, "Posing in Bondage," and "Savage Good Boy," which examines billionaires buying bunkers from the perspective of a wealthy man coaxing a young woman underground.
Jubilee received widespread critical acclaim, earning a Metacritic score of 88/100. Critics praised its joyful tone, production, and Zauner's maturation as a songwriter. The album was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards and won four Libera Awards, including Record of the Year. It became the band's most successful album commercially, peaking at number 56 on the Billboard 200 and ranking on numerous year-end lists, including number 1 on Slant and number 2 on Consequence of Sound.
