Hot Buttered Soul is the second studio album by Isaac Hayes, released in 1969 through Stax Records. Following the poor commercial performance of his debut, Hayes agreed to make another solo record only after being granted complete creative control. Recorded with the Bar Kays, the album consists of four extended tracks and marked a major shift from the concise soul arrangements that had defined much of Hayes' earlier work as a songwriter and producer.
The record is built around lengthy, heavily arranged performances that combine soul, orchestral instrumentation, spoken passages, and extended instrumental development. Its centerpiece recordings include a 12 minute version of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Walk On By" and an almost 19 minute interpretation of Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." Hayes performed vocals and Hammond organ while directing the tracking band, with additional strings and horns arranged by Johnny Allen.
Hot Buttered Soul reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart and number eight on the Billboard 200. Its extended song structures and expansive production became influential within soul and R&B, helping establish Hayes as a major recording artist in his own right.
